Since 1985, the International Union of Architects (UIA), the world umbrella organisation of the architectural profession, has declared the first Monday of October each year as the World Architecture Day (WAD). The day is parallel with the World Urban Habitat Day, under the auspices of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

The day has been observed around the world as a recognition and celebration for the immersive roles played by architects in leading and shaping our built and living environment. For many years, architects have been the ‘frontliners’ in designing and providing habitable spaces for human beings, meeting all aspects and requirements of our needs, lifestyle and everyday living.

In view of this year’s celebration that falls on 5th October 2020, with our world is still grappling with the pandemic of COVID-19, the UIA has selected ‘Toward A Better Urban Future’ theme, mirroring the current outbreak issue that our world is facing now. It also highlights the vital role of architects in curbing the outbreak through designing suitable and workable spaces responding to the crisis management, working closely with medical professionals, health specialists and other professionals.
