Awal Muharram signifies the beginning of the Islamic New Year, with the name Muharram is coined from the first month of Islamic calendar. The Islamic calendar system begins 1,399 years ago with the migration of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and his followers from Makkah to Madinah. In Malaysia, it is also known as Maal Hijrah Day, whereby the day is celebrated by a national-level rally with a line-up of events including a personality award ceremony.
